Grounds Manager Darren Balfour maintains the extensive 134-hectare grounds of Pt. Leo Estate. With more than 30 years of landscaping and turf management experience, Darren brings a wealth of skill and knowledge in all aspects of horticulture and turf industries to his position.
As grounds manager, Darren oversees the daily maintenance and upkeep of the estate to keep it looking its most elegant, including gardening, tending to the vines and organising the placement and landscaping of its world-class sculptures, now 53 to date. Day-to-day, Darren manages a diverse workflow including recruitment, staffing, daily work programmes, budgeting, OHS contractor management and future planning.
His role also extends to beekeeping – producing the estate-made honey that’s available on the menu at Laura – and looking after the 100-plus head of Black Angus cattle at the estate. Before joining Pt. Leo Estate, Darren was the course superintendent at the National Golf Club at Cape Schanck for over ten years.
