Lon to Leo, Victoria
A LUXE RETREAT AND A UNIQUE WINERY JOIN FORCES
The Weekend Australian – 10th July 2021
Article by Glynis Trail-Nash
The next morning, the second bit of the “Lon to Leo” package begins: a ferry ride across Port Phillip Bay and then a drive to Pt Leo Estate, the renowned winery and sculpture garden. Its 135ha of landscaped grounds hug the architecturally alluring main building and restaurant, and are filled with towering sculptures by Australian and International artists, from the serene silhouette of Jaume Plensa’s Laura and the stark graphic shape and color of Reko Rennie’s Mirri to the latest addition, the cartoony Share 2020 by KAWS.
We head to Laura, Pt. Leo Estate’s fine-dining restaurant, where the eight course degustation menu is filled to overflowing with the best of the region and beyond. Fried bone marrow immediately catches my attention, as does lobster flambé. Matching wines extend to champagne, sake and madeira for something a little different, each selection described in an engaging and amusing manner by our delightful sommelier. Service here is, naturally, at the top of its game. And a rum baba dessert is served with your choice of rum – an intoxicating finish as the mid-afternoon sun illuminates the sculptures around us.
This collaboration between two leading businesses across the water is a stroke of genius, and brings an added depth to an already indulgent weekend getaway. I did get lost in Lon (and Leo). But in the best way possible.
