Winter Warming Wine at Pt. Leo Estate

The Mornington Peninsula takes on its own beauty in winter.  The ground is cooling down and winter vegetables are being harvested from our kitchen garden. It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy a warming red wine in our cellar door or fireside dining featuring local winter produce in Laura or Pt. Leo Restaurant. With our first anniversary not far away, and our first vintage dinner in August, we thought it was time we shared more news on our wine. Read on to discover more.

What’s Happening

Great Chef’s Series

Culinary Director Phil Wood is heading south to participate in the Great Chef’s Series at Joseph Chromy Wines on the 10th August. Between the months of May to October, Josef Chromy Wines, Restaurant and Cellar is hosting a series of public events, where cookery students work alongside visiting guest chefs including our very own Culinary Director Phil Wood, in developing and delivering a seven-course degustation, matched with some of finest cool climate Tasmanian wines from Josef Chromy Wines using Tasmanian produce. Staff out-and-about:

New Season Olive Oils – There is nothing quite like a team bonding session, particularly when our friends and suppliers are involved. The restaurant team, led by Phil, headed to Cape Schanck to see all the new season oils being pressed. We love extra virgin olive oil and we use it generously in our restaurants, particularly for dipping our house-made apple bread and focaccia. Our favourite variety from Cape Schanck is the ‘Frantoio’, a lovely fragrant and floral oil.

Truffle Hunt – Our staff were lucky enough to join Jenny McAuley, and her dog Thomas on a truffle hunt among the oak and hazelnut trees (or also known as ‘truffiere’) on her spectacular Red Hill property which has been passed down to her through the generations.

The Grounds

We were fortunate for the opportunity to rescue some heritage apple trees from a nearby organic farm and planted them in our kitchen garden. The trees are grown in an espalier style meaning they are trained out like a vine.

Pruning & more pruning – Every vine has been pruned by hand here at Pt. Leo Estate by an amazing team of staff! It is vital for the pruning to be done correctly to enable an excellent crop for the following year. We now wait to see the cover crop of wheat and peas to flower, and then we look forward to the bud-burst in early spring!

Wine Terrace has a roof – we are very excited about our winter roof recently installed over our Wine Terrace. Rain, hail or shine – you can enjoy a cheese board & some live music from 1pm on Saturday & Sunday each weekend.  The open bar and our terrace menu offerings in our all-weather Wine Terrace lends itself to gatherings that focus on friends, celebration and a sense of place.

Wine News

We are so proud of the reviews we have received for both of our restaurants, over the past few months. We are also so very excited about our 2016 Chardonnay which was awarded a silver medal by the judging panel at the 18th International Cool Climate Wine Show.
